In The Shock Doctrine Naomi Klein explains how, based on the economic theory of the Chicago professor Milton Friedman, catastrophic situations have been repeatedly used after a similar pattern since the 1970s to generate large profits for investors through privatizations and deregulations against the will of a population and often accompanied by the use of physical violence. At the same time a large part of the population becomes impoverished.
Our video deals with the chapter on the tourism boom in Sri Lanka after the tsunami in 2004, for which hundreds of thousands of fishermen were driven off the beaches.
